Rare Earth Gallery began as Rare Earth Pottery in 1976. The original owner, a master potter by the name of Dave Engesath, featured only pottery for its first 29 years. In 1991, the studio relocated to its current historic downtown Stuart site. When Dave retired in 2004, he sold to a couple that began to introduce different media and new artists, but their focus remained on the production and selling of pottery. In 2009, Rare Earth was sold to Becky and Steve Binder, who remained the owners for 11 years. The Binders renovated the space, transforming Rare Earth Pottery into Rare Earth Gallery - a bright, clean, thoughtfully designed gallery. This was accomplished with a major investment in their only location, and with the aspiration to help support the revitalization of the historic downtown Stuart shopping district. Since that time, several new media lines were added, and 45 new artists were introduced. Unique, handmade art became the focus, and of the gallery's current 70+ artists, about 50% are from the state of Florida.
Rare Earth Gallery continued with on-premises pottery through April of 2013, but at that point, the Binders decided to move the potters to their own off-site location. The latest renovation and investment, finished in September 2013, brought a fresh look and a 30% expansion of the retail gallery. New graphics and logos completed the update, and since then Rare Earth Gallery has certainly become a destination for art on the Treasure Coast! Today, Rare Earth Gallery has an online presence and an e-newsletter that reaches nearly 3000 people. It has been recognized as one of the top 10 places on the Treasure Coast for sustainable gifts, has won the Stuart Business Buzz award, been an active member of the Downtown Business Association of Stuart, and winner of Hometown News Best Art Gallery in North Martin County.
After many successful years of ownership, the Binders made the decision to retire, and in the Fall of 2020 (during a challenging time for the United States and the world) they passed the proverbial "baton" to Teresa Klein. Teresa has a long-standing background in the Arts, having been a curator, an education coordinator and associate director of galleries in Ohio and DC. Teresa was also teaching Visual Arts and Art History in North Carolina until December of 2020, and in January of 2021 was finally able to devote her time solely to her new endeavor as owner of Rare Earth Gallery. Teresa is also an artist, and her drawings and paintings are now featured among those works of other familiar artists in the gallery. She will also be scouting for new art, and has already added several new artisans to the Rare Earth repertoire.
